2011 Winthrop Auto Rallye & Swap Meet

On September 9, 10 and 11, 2011, the Chamber of Commerce of Winthrop, Washington will host the 36th Annual “Winthrop Auto Rallye,” featuring antiques, classics, rods, trucks, and special interest vehicles, as well as tractors and works in progress. This year’s rally includes a Friday evening cruise-in social hour and next-day continental breakfast, a parade, show and shine, bucket run, and new this year- A Sunday Morning Swap Meet!
What makes the Winthrop Auto Rallye unique is the variety of vehicles participating. According to Mark Seguin, head judge, “it’s not just hot-rods or antiques – it’s a mixture of cars.” Some are in showroom condition and others have been customized. Imagine a Model T Ford with a V-8 engine, blower, big tires and a custom paint job.

Friday, September 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. is registration/check-in at the Winthrop Red Barn. There, entrants will enjoy a “cruise-in” social hour with refreshments and music.
Saturday, September 10, the Winthrop Inn, and Winthrop Red Apple Market, will host a continental breakfast with hot coffee from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the Winthrop Inn. Auto enthusiasts, young and old, are invited to come mingle with the rally participants. According to Winthrop Inn owner, Gene Westlund, every year, “there is an air of expectancy” at the inn as latecomers line the driveway to register at the last minute, and as drivers conduct last minute cleaning before lining up for the motorcade to Winthrop.
The parade downtown begins at 11:00 a.m. Larry Higbee and his crew of knowledgeable judges, including Hugh Glassburn, Mike Sweeney, and Duane Hutson will announce each entry’s year, make, model, and any notable features. Leading the parade will be Winthrop’s Shafer Museum’s own 1914 Model T Ford.
The Show and Shine, is from 12 until 3 p.m. along a foot-traffic-only portion of Winthrop’s main street. Winthrop’s “River Town Ramblers” band will set up on the street to play classic oldie and dance tunes from 1 until 4 p.m. Winthrop’s fine eateries will be serving delicious fare. Spectators can stroll through the show to cast their vote for the “The Winthrop Cup” the people’s choiceShow award. Visitors will also enjoy Winthrop’s unique shops and galleries.
At 4 p.m. the judges will announce their findings. They will award the “Best: in the following categories, Antique, Classic, Street Rod pre-1948, Street Rod 1948 and up, Muscle Car, Truck, Tractor, and Special Interest. There will also be awards for Best paint, Best Interior, Longest Distance, Most Winthrop Auto Rallye participation and a Best in Show.
From 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. rally drivers can take in the early autumn colors as they cruise the beautiful Methow Valley in a “bucket run” from Winthrop to Twisp and back.
Capping off the day at 7 p.m. is the Dollar Watch Cowboy Jamboree at the Barn. Lauralee Northcott and her nationally acclaimed Horse Crazy cowgirl band hosts this hilarious trip down the memory trail which revisits the golden age of radio. Lauralee Northcott will present the Winthrop Cup to the winner of the 36th Annual Winthrop Auto Rallye’s People’s Choice- Best in Show. This is a joyful community event for visitors and locals alike.
Sunday morning there is something to this event- a Swap meet! Starting early in the morning in the Winthrop barn parking lot, there will be breakfast available and lots of opportunities to find that one piece of memorabilia, auto part, photo that you have been looking for.
